Reading

Two books this week: "Survival of the Sickest" by Sharon Moalem, and "The Hero of Ages", the final part of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy.

The first one is a fairly light read on disease and genetics, and was really quite enjoyable. It's the kind of book I tend to read when I decide I want to read something intelligent, and it's a lot more modern about genetics in that it discusses genes as being much more dynamic than you'd find in more traditional ("older") books on the subject.

It's a bit unorthodox in other areas too. I like the aquatic ape hypothesis that the book brings up as much as anybody, but I guess that's not very mainstream. But whether mainstream or not, the book is a very enjoyable read and definitely merits reading.

Recommended.

As to Hero of Ages, I'm happy to finish the trilogy. It was a worthy finish, and I like Sanderson (both in Mistborn and in Elantris).

My only real complaint is that I just hate being forced to buy hard-cover books - they take up too much space in our already cramped bookshelves, but more importantly they're also much harder to read. I like reading lying on my back, and since I don't do any sports my muscles have atrophied to the point where holding up a hard-cover book for hours counts as more exercise than I really consider enjoyable.

(I keed, I keed. I can bench-press a hardcover book all day long. But it's true that they're less convenient)

So if you haven't already been suckered into the Mistborn trilogy, I'd suggest holding off until you can find it as mass-market paperbacks. I didn't have that choice - as usual, I had made the mistake of starting the series too early, and I'm not big on the whole "delayed gratification" thing. Which is why publishers do that whole hard-cover thing, of course.

But maybe you like hardcover books. Some people seem to think that it's a status sign. I'd personally much prefer that publishers just came out with a (more expensive, by all means) paperback initial printing, but I guess I'm odd. I pay for the words, not for the bulk.

I like hardcovers, especially for the thicker books, because the binding doesn't fail as often. (I picked up some paperback copies of Steven Erikson's Malazn series, early on... and they fell apart on me.)

Imagine you read vineyards of anger. of more than 500 pages. hard cover. and a very entertaining book. I sometimes regret this habit of not being able to stop reading.

Well, if weight matters, maybe some electronic book-reader like Amazon's Kindle would suit even better than paper-back books... :)

I gave up on physical books long ago. Its a nice feeling to have more books than your local library in a flash card the size of your fingernail (Thanks to the public domain works form places like Project Gutenberg and the less legal copyright ignoring '13130' collection).

Unfortunately there still aren't any decent ebook readers around, I'm Aussie so the Kindle is out (without stuffing around with importing it and loosing out on the wireless side of things) the Plastic Logik one looks good but does lack even basic wifi (And I'm guessing will be expensive). Right now I'm just using an eeepc (the 701 with the smaller screen).

I think the main problem with these readers is the lack of a decent interface for them, theres no dogear functionality for instance.

Also I would love a colour one for comic books and magazines but thats a few years off at least.

Buy a kindle and don't lift hard cover books. :) I love mine... I rarely buy any paper books any more.

Ugh, yeah, I agree, hardcover books are an annoying inconvenience.

I suggest a netbook...I don't think you can put amazon books designed for the kindle on it, but you can get tons of ebooks from other places.

The Acer Aspire One is less than the new Sony 700 ebook reader and just slightly more than the 505. It has more features and ability (if not quite as much battery) and would serve much the same purpose.

@happy - Reading is not such a bad habit. At least it won't make you fat (reading and chocolate are my two vices...)

I don't actually own many hardcovers - for some reason most publishers in the NZ market prefer to ship the hardcover-sized trade-paperback format for initial printings, then later re-issue the regular size.

I don't have a particular preference for large or small sizes, but the mismatch is always a pain when you start reading a series after the first couple of books - the existing ones are all available only in regular paperback, and all the new ones come out in trade - unless you're willing to wait a year or so for the paperback issue.

I prefer hardcovers. They are more durable and stay open easier (although I generally read lying on my stomach or with the book flat on a table)

The formatting on this review is bad due to Slashdot's book review HTML tag requirements (would look fine if it made it to the front page), but I think you might find the book to be quite interesting.

So, when is 2.6.28 stable coming out? ;-)

i say get a library card several really from many libraries that way you don't have to buy the books and no space is taken up. or you could share books with your friends. My sister, sister-in-law and i do this we finish a great book and pass it on. I only buy the ones i really really love.

Hardcovers or no, I read also for the the words found inside. Reading is fun, even with just candy wrappers, they contain info you need. Merry Christmas!

I haven't heard much about the aquatic ape since Elaine Morgan's books. The survival book looks like a good read. Happy new year. Oh thanks for working on that hibernate bug too. That's much appreciated!!!

Hi Linus,

(you don't have to approve this by the way, just couldn't find a contact email on your blog :-)

I know your blog may not be the typical target for advertising, but that is kind of what I am going for.

I'm work with a project that creates lessons that teach people how to become more confident on their computers...basic skills, tools, etc. There are free lessons and then a paid area with deeper, more valuable content.

It doesn't have a corporate feel and so I don't feel like advertising that way. My goal is to build a network of small blogs doing the promotion, especially blogs of a personal or family nature.

I guess really there are two options if you are at all interested.

OPTION 1:

First, name a price for monthly advertising on your blog. I'll pay you over PayPal and give you a banner image to use. Obviously I would like the link to be in a highly visible place, so maybe name a location you'd feel comfortable with as well as different locations would have different values. If you have any info on how many people may watch your blog that would be helpful too.

OPTION 2:

People (non-advertisers) who refer visitors to the site receive 50% ($10) of the monthly fees ($20) of those people that sign up for the paid part of the site. Now, granted, your blog may only refer a handful of people to the site, from which one or two may each month may become paid members. But a little math says that within a year, 2 members/mo x 12 mos. x $10 = $240/mo for not much work on your end.

If you are at all interested just shoot me and email back and let me know. Hopefully we cna help each other out. Thanks for your help,

Gregg

One thing I like about hardcover books is how durable they are. I'm particularly hard on books, probably because I read them all over the house and even in the bathtub, and I like it when they hold together for a long time. I've got paperbacks from as little as ten years ago that are in rough shape, but all of my older hardcovers look great.

I purchase physical books instead of ebooks for two main reasons. Firstly, because the only way I can lose a physical book is to, well, lose it; and secondly because they're not dependent on any sort of playback system and therefore will survive as long as they're kept nicely.

Books are an investment not just for myself, but for my future children. It will give them insight into what I like and how I think, and just the fact that I will have the books around that I read when I was younger will be great because it will remind me to make them read things that were really influential on me. If I just went to the library or bought ephemeral ebooks, I might forget all about some of the gems I like most after a few years pass.
